Marianske Lazne (internationally known as Marienbad) is smaller, less urban and arguably prettier than Karlovy Vary. Making it feel more like a classic spa destination. In the resort’s heyday, it drew such luminaries as Goethe, Thomas Edison, Britain’s King Edward VII, and even American author Mark Twain.

These days many visitors are day-trippers strolling the gardens and colonnades before having the inevitable apfelstrudel in one of the cafes.

Besides the colonnades, the town is ringed by deep forests. More than a dozen trails wind through the woods and past pavilions and springs. A popular trail climbs to Hotel Panorama, round past an old stone watchtower (100 steps). An easier loop trail heads north past Forest spring to Lunapark, a pleasant cafe and spa hotel surrounded by forest.
