The Unesco-protected historic landscape of Valtice-Lednice is a popular weekend destination for Czechs. Those who tour the historic architecture, hike, and bike, and sample the region’s wines. The two towns are about 10km apart, connected by regular buses. Neither Valtice nor Lednice offer much in terms of nightlife, so they are best visited as a day trip from either Mikulov or Brno.

But if you’ve got more time, either town makes a perfect base for exploring the rolling hills of the southern Moravian wine country: hundreds of miles of walking and cycling trails criss-cross a mostly unspoiled landscape. Tourist offices in both towns have maps, and you can rent bikes from Cycloray in Valtice.
